“Over the years I’ve tried various gyms, running, P90X (that was a hilarious failure in my living room), and even individual sessions at a private gym. I’d make a bit of progress but then backslide to right where I was before if not worse.
At age 46 I found myself weighing the most I’d ever been and generally feeling pretty unhealthy. Years of extensive business travel and long commutes had taken their toll and I was beginning to have not-so-fun conversations with my doctor about impending health problems if I didn’t make some changes.
Around the same time, a friend of mine living across the country had transformed his life by doing CrossFit and losing over 100 lbs. He encouraged me to try it. A quick Google search showed that CrossFit Salisbury was quite close to my home. But I’d never lifted weights and found the apparent intensity intimidating. Years passed as I tried and failed with all the other stuff.
Finally, I decided to give it a shot and walked into the box on a hot August weekend. The next six months were the most physically challenging of my life but also showed the most dramatic improvement in my fitness and health.
I was very out of shape and had never done a strict pull up (I ran track and played with computers in school). The coaches taught me the movements and helped me learn to do lifts properly, minimizing the chance I would get hurt. I was taught alternative movements for exercises that were beyond me, such as doing jumping pull-ups instead of strict. Even when every single thing in a workout was scaled or modified for me, I’d still end up panting on my back looking at the ceiling. That’s CrossFit: everyone gets an intense and correct workout for their ability. It was hard work but the weight dropped off fast and my ability to do the workouts began to improve.
After six months, I had my annual physical and the doctor said one thing to me, “Whatever you are doing, keeping doing it.”
What kept me coming back and working hard? The dedicated and inspiring coaches and members in the 5:30 a.m. class that became my fitness home. They welcomed me immediately and provided encouragement when I struggled and held me accountable when I needed it. You often hear that the special thing about CrossFit is the community and that is true at CrossFit Salisbury. This box has your back and wants you to be successful. That community is the single greatest reason why I have stuck with this for a year now and is the biggest difference from all the other programs I’ve tried.
And as of this writing at 12 months in, I’m the healthiest and fittest I’ve ever been and I’ve almost got that first strict pull-up. I’m coming for you, pull-up!”
