“CrossFit has changed and saved my life! I used to be a heavy set “healthy” person who hit the gym and rode a bicycle with a road bike club for years. Tried aerobics, Body-step, Body-pump and even Yoga. Whatever new fad came along to keep me moving I was trying. At 48, I discovered a new sport, Kiteboarding, and quickly found that nothing in my training program prepared me for this new sport. After a few days of kiteboarding, my body was wrecked. So of course I Googled what is the best exercise for Kiteboarding and surprise, surprise Functional Fitness and Crossfit lit up my homepage. I started CrossFit the next week and haven’t looked back.
I experienced good success early on with this new Crossfit programming. I had started to achieve lifts and movements I never knew my body could perform. I started to lose some weight, get strong and quickly adapted to this new style of training. Inspired by the annual CrossFit Games competition, I started entering local and regional Masters Competitions and started WINNING. I was in shape, feeling great, really enjoying the atmosphere at the Box with new friends and life was great.
But then like it so often does, adversity struck. About two years into CrossFit, I was diagnosed with Stage 4 throat cancer. The treatment was hard, radiation daily, chemotherapy treatments, lost lots of weight, feeding tube….. It just plain sucked. But every day I kept telling myself, one more rep, one more day, one more week, I can do this. And I did, I beat CANCER!!!
It’s been 18 months since my last treatment and I’m back at the Box with my friends. I have had great success regaining my strength, stamina, power, balance and all the other critical elements we as humans need to live a functional life. I have started to hit Personal Records (PR’s) on WODs I had done before I got sick and on top of all this I have also begun coaching at CrossFit Salisbury. I have met many other throat cancer patients since I got to join this exclusive club and have been asked how I overcame this speed bump life threw at me. I always answer the same way “Being in great physical shape due to Crossfit before my cancer and having the ability to re-achieve those goals after with a supportive Box, allowed my mind, body and soul to be in the right place for recovery.”
