“I decided to give CrossFit a shot after some major life changes. Three years earlier I was 60 pounds overweight, on high blood pressure medication and being told that I had pre-diabetes. I started dieting and my exercise program consisted of daily walks. My children would crack jokes as I headed out to consistently walk the mall. It wasn’t long before their laughs dried up as they witnessed my walking turn into running and my figure starting to shrink. Months later I eventually hit my goal weight and could drop all my medication. However, my fitness was still very much one dimensional as I lacked upper body strength and my balance and agility were not very good. This is where I started setting goals for my next challenge.
After completing a couple of mud races, I noticed that I would get crushed at the obstacles and I’d be smoked at the finish line. As I talked to some of the leaders they attributed CrossFit (CF) to their ability to finish well. I decided to give this new-found program a shot. When I got home I began searching for a local CF affiliate and this is where my path intersected with CrossFit Salisbury.
I still remember the first day I walked through the door….. There was insider language I didn’t understand (E.g. WOD, EMOM, box, double unders, etc.) and the movements were so intimidating when I saw the seasoned athletes performing them. However, the coaches and athletes welcomed me as one of their own and that is what brought me back. They met me where I was and wanted to see me succeed! I noticed that the cheers were just as loud for the person that finished last as the leaders. This type of culture is infectious and it brings people from all walks of life together in community. The members truly want to see each other become the best version of themselves. Not only have I seen my physique improve but I feel that I can perform better in life.
The best part of all of this is I’ve met several great friends and my daughter has joined me in the journey. I am so glad I have found this tribe of warriors and I look forward to the hour spent with them each day battling through the WOD.
